We are in the midst of a significant transformation in how we produce products thanks to the digitization of manufacturing. This transition is so compelling that it is called Industry 4.0 to represent the fourth revolution in manufacturing. It is a broad vision of tomorrow’s manufacturing — products that independently find their way through production. From the first industrial revolution (mechanization through water and steam power) to mass production and assembly lines using electricity in the second, the fourth industrial revolution will take on what started in the third with the adoption of computers and automation. It will enhance it with intelligent technology and autonomous systems powered by data and machine learning.

The digital revolution is fundamentally transforming the way people live and work, and the public remains optimistic about the opportunities Industry 4.0 can offer for sustainability.

While Industry 4.0 is dismissed by some as simply a marketing buzzword, manufacturing changes are taking place that deserves attention — this is not just a revolution in consumer technology.
