Reye’s syndrome is characterized by the onset of rapidly progressing inflammation of the brain and liver.
It is very rare; nowadays, it affects approximately 1/1 000 00 children. It mainly affects children between the ages of 4 and 12.
What is the cause? Are there children more predisposed or at greater risk?
The exact cause of Reye’s syndrome is unknown, nor is it known why it affects children the most.
There are children with congenital metabolic diseases, in which their organism cannot perform some biochemical reactions, who are predisposed to develop a very similar syndrome called Reye-like syndrome. Early diagnosis and advances in the treatment of these children have also contributed to the decrease in cases of Reye’s syndrome.
