The Aftermath of Overprotection

Many people believe that people who come from dysfunctional families or where there is no father, mother, or both have emotional problems, such as depression, low self-esteem, are addicted, violent, have mental disorders, etc. In addition to being the only people who engage in “toxic” relationships.

However, some people come from families that are “functional” and also tend to engage in harmful relationships (both romantic and friendly). Given this, many can look at it with bewilderment, arguing “in my family that was never seen.” And the answer is something that no one can imagine:

OVERPROTECTION.

In psychology, “overprotection occurs when children are prevented from assuming the duties, freedoms and/or responsibilities inherent in their developmental phase, with the intention of having an easier, more comfortable, happy and risk-free life. The consequence of this is that the boy or girl does not learn to function normally in the usual and everyday circumstances, which, he or she will have to face tomorrow.”

And of course; this can be reflected in adult life, creating different difficulties such as insecurity and mistrust in themselves, low self-esteem, codependence, attachments, fears, as well as getting involved in harmful relationships.
