The Life of a Latina Girl Throughout Her School Life

After more than a decade of lethargy, education has again placed itself among the region’s leading social and political debate issues. In several countries, institutional reforms are being carried out to achieve a more efficient system adapted to global and local needs and demands; and more focused on the search for agreements and consensus concerning goals and procedures that commit all community sectors around long-term tasks.

Today, the coverage expansion model in force in the last 40 years has entered a crisis due to the degeneration in the quality of the educational offer and the ineffective use of the operational capacities of the system. In addition, its inadequacy concerning the new demands of the productive sector is also highlighted; the imbalance of the urban-rural supply, the existence of learning circuits of unequal quality within the public system, and the loss of value of education as a means of social advancement.

Regional organizations such as ECLAC and many governments are beginning to reconsider what role education should play to ensure product development with equity and, consequently, how to ensure access to a minimum standard of educational quality for all social sectors. .
