Why do “almost something” hurt so much in love?

A break with a love that was not given hurts us a lot. Those “almost something” that hurt us as if they had been everything generally leave us mixed feelings. We took on the task of reading several couples therapists and psychologists to understand why we feel as if our heart had broken in two after having experienced a breakdown of this nature.
